FYI – Click on the photos to see full size

This past Friday there were a few openings around LA I wanted to catch. The plan was to make a trek across the city beginning with Thinkspace Gallery in Silverlake and ending at C.A.V.E in Venice. I’m not going to pretend to be an art critic so this will not be a fair and balanced review of what I saw, but i WOULD like to share some of the work that blew me away.

First up, Thinkspace is consistently one of my favorite galleries to visit because they are SO ON POINT all the time. The work they exhibit is fresh and dynamic and always a pleasure to see. This month’s exhibit was Timothy Karpinski and Turf One.

Karpinski’s work was pastel, soft, romantic and felt so very nostalgic in some way. There were an abundance of painted paper cutouts woven together to create figures and stylized wooden cutouts with tiny messages written in secret spots.

Turf One’s work was in the back of the gallery with two pieces painted directly on the wall.

The paintings were whimsical and bizarre and a little dark and so very beautifully rendered. There was also a wonderful mix of tactile objects and unusual frame which made the paintings beautifully self-contained little islands of wonder. And really, do you see this monkey? I think he’s going to pop out and cymbal me in the face.

Next I hit up Copro Nason for the Wilderness Buffet show. Unfortunately I arrived 10 minutes too late only to be asked if I’m “picking someone up” by a tall man in a suit. Confusion set in momentarily, later to be dispelled by the sound of top 40 tunes bumping from a nearby space and the vision of overdressed adolescents. Apparently I had crashed the end of a high school homecoming dance at Bergamot Station. Moving on.

C.A.V.E Gallery in Venice was my final stop. There was a group show on that night, but two pieces struck me in particular.

The first was a piece by Kendra Binney, whose work I’d seen before in pictures, but never in person. I have to say I was absolutely stunned by this piece when I walked in. It’s painted on a wood panel, and covered in a heavy coat of resin which gives it a really striking appearance. It’s reflective and vibrant and so dimensional. Absolutely beautiful.

The final showcase is a watercolor by Tina Darling which was beautifully illustrated and had a perfect mixture of this large subtle form in the middle surrounded by this really intricate hair.

I absolutely love seeing artworks in person. I always come away being surprised and inspired and just feeling elated overall.

And the Death of Twitter as Marketing’s Young Mistress

And the Death of Twitter as Marketing’s Young Mistress

*Note: Well this is a bit different from what I normally post, but it’s my blog, and it would be criminal not to use it as my own personal soapbox on occasion. Here goes.*

AdAge is abuzz with musings of Social Media solutions to companies’ current marketing needs, but will this be a continuing trend or just the product of a downturned economy and dissipating ad budgets? Will the reach of networks such as Facebook and Twitter continue to expand or has the peak been reached foretelling only an increased signal-to-noise ratio with more and more advertising masquerading as personal opinion? If so, what’s next?

Steve Rubel touts the death of Twitter on AdAge only days after he instructs readers how to become a Twitter Power-User on his blog.

In the meantime, Zeus Jones, Barbarian Group and Coca Cola are singing the praises of Social Media Marketing during difficult economic times due to its proliferation and low cost.

Companies like Apple and Skype, using services such as Magpie are attempting to cash in on the interwoven threads of communication between tweeters.

All of this is either a product of, or, perhaps, the driving force behind the record growth of these social networks, muses Mashable. Most of the new users are joining to listen.

Today, companies have to navigate a fine line between cutting budgets to stay ahead of decreasing revenues while continuing advertising to maintain relevancy for the inevitable spurt of growth which will follow the recession. Social Media is affording marketers a perfect opportunity due to its vast reach and unprecedentedly low overhead. The question then rests on Social Media’s longevity. Based on their recent growth, there is little doubt that Facebook or Twitter will dissipate as social networks – after all, people still use MySpace. They may not, however, last much longer as the magical, dirt-cheap advertising solution marketers are hoping them to be. The foreseeable future may hold new answers for advertisers attempting to make a statement.

The current trend is going “micro”. The reason Twitter has caught the eye of advertisers is because it simulates (or in some cases IS) a grass-roots, word-of-mouth, casual, direct way to communicate with their customers. The downside of this is it only lasts as long as people don’t realize they are being advertised to.
The equal and opposite reaction to the “micro” format of social networking will be the “macro” format that advertising is likely to take when the economy turns around and budgets rise again. Macro Marketing in a few years will have to embody a different format from (and in addition to) today’s massive media campaigns. Perhaps they will utilize user-generated content, perhaps new systems and technologies which haven’t yet caught on – but the short-format Social Media messages are unlikely to be able to sustain the exposure that large companies require in order to stay relevant for the majority of their audience.

The fact that the world of advertising at large is catching on to Social Media marketing in full force, means its days are numbered. Visualize different forms of advertising on the internet as being a series of voices. Currently, some are shouting, some speaking softly, some in long form and some in short. Now imagine everyone moving towards the short form and the same volume and eventually everyone is back to out-shouting each other. As the general noise level increases, in an inevitable attempt to set themselves apart, someone remembers they’ve got a megaphone in their bag. They will start thinking bigger – thinking spectacle, and by then, it might be a welcome break.

Hey all,

The Compound Gallery show is coming up this Thursday, July 3rd and being the uuberprocrastimanator that I am, the largest, newest piece for the show is sitting in the corner, half done, glaring at me. The world of shipping has not been kind and I am still scrambling to find a place to stay while I’m in Portland.

That said, if you’re in the area, please stop by and check out my work along with Axelhoney, Anneli Olander, Hannah Stouffer and Juri Ueda.

The .candycoated. painting (top right on the flyer below) will be available as a limited edition digital print through the gallery. The size is about 11×17 inches and the edition is 20, signed and numbered.

On another note…

If any of you live in the Los Angeles area, or anywhere within 500 miles for that matter, I highly recommend, at some point in your life, that you attend the Electric Daisy Carnival. My friend and I made dresses (I use the term lightly) to wear for the event based on a doodle in my sketchbook. I thought it up and she thought it possible, so we spent a couple of long nights reacquainting ourselves with a sewing machine. If you are interested in seeing the sketch and the final products, leave a comment and I’ll post some pics.

Have a fantabulous week and I hope to maybe see some of you in Portland on Thursday!

-tk
