A few weeks ago I completed a project for Disney and Target for the upcoming clothing line collaboration with Demi Lovato. It was done with the help of some awesome folks at A Common Thread and super talented Ross Ching of Little Bribes fame.

The video is a mixture of live action and animated sequences that were done in a really unorthodox way. (It took four cups of coffee and a brain cramp for me to visualize the first time around.) The biggest challenge was creating transitions between the two that would look natural within the flow of the video and would feel like the animations are part of the story.

To create the animation, each of the panels is drawn on a folded series of pages which the actor unfolds as they go along in a specifically choreographed order. Opening and closing the panels creates the illusion of motion. We brainstormed everything from post-it flipbooks to paper dolls and some of the ideas show up in the final piece. I’ve recently found myself being giddily rediscovering street art. The massive format, the unusual locations, the differing techniques all make seeing art outside a very different experience than the controlled experience of a gallery show. There’s something immensely appealing about being surprised by beauty when you least expect it; about finding it when it’s just a little dirty and imperfect and weathered and stunning nonetheless.

Moment of Zen

It’s been a while since I saw a video that made my jaw drop and felt was worthy of Moment of Zen status, but Wizard Smoke fits the bill to a tee. I love seeing beautiful cinematography mixed with unique effects, especially when those effects are just quirky ways of playing with color and light and dust and smoke. I really appreciate people who are willing to get dirty (so to speak) in order to produce something that looks unique instead of defaulting to some pre-packaged filter.

In any case, everything about this video is divine, from the cinematography to the music to the editing. I like the wavering tempo of it which is unusual for other videos I’ve seen on the subject, but is so wonderfully refresing. Enjoy.

Came across this beautiful short by Terri Timely today on the subject of Synesthesia. The cinematography in this film is stunning and there’s a very nice arc in the story which starts of gradually and builds like a complex piece of music. In keeping with its theme, this video made me feel more like I was listening to a song, picking out the nuances of separate instruments and hearing the arc almost more than watching the images. Perhaps because the play on senses makes the piece so abstract, there’s something very experiential about watching this video.

It’s certainly worth a look.

This beautiful short stars Audrey Tautou and was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet for Chanel No 5 perfume. The film builds an amazing amount of anticipation in its 2:20 run-time. Even without dialogue, beautiful cinematography really brings the narrative to life.
